Insurance

EVERYONE who owns, rides or handles horses should have the protection of Personal Liability Insurance in case of injury or property damage caused by a horse or horses. Even if you do not own a horse, you may be held liable for damage caused by a horse you are riding or leading. Horses are large animals and accidents can and do happen. As a benefit of membership, the AEF has partnered with Capri Insurance to offer exceptional insurance coverage to our members.

Affiliates and Associates

Insurance benefits are available to AEF Affiliate and Association members.  Please visit the Association & Affiliate Membership page for further details on coverage available to our member organisations.

Individual and Family Members automatically receive: 

Personal Liability Insurance ($1000 Property Damage Deductible)

$5,000,000 Excess Personal Liability Insurance that will protect you, the member, if you are sued by a third party because a horse that you own or lease, ride or handle, causes property damage or bodily injury to a third party.

This policy includes coverage for Transportation of Non-Owned Horses. This liability coverage addresses the exposure that could arise in the event of death of a non-owned horse that you are transporting (trailering) This coverage applies in a non-commercial situation only, and is subject to a limit of $10,000 per horse and $50,000 per accident. Please note - this is not commercial horse transport insurance and is not life insurance for the horse being transported - this is liability insurance to protect you if you are sued by a third party.

This coverage is in force 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and covers the member anywhere in the world (some exclusions apply for members who are non-Canadian residents).

Accident Death & Dismemberment

$30,000 Accident Death & Dismemberment coverage if you, the member, should suffer a catastrophic and permanent injury (or death) related to an incident where horses are involved. This coverage is in force 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and covers the member anywhere in the world.

NEW! This coverage has been expanded to also include a fracture benefit which is enhanced if you are wearing an industry approved helmet; and a benefit for dental injuries.

Optional coverage(s) can not be purchased without a current AEF membership.

Members Named Perils

Coverage for your own horses(s) in case of death resulting from fire, lightning or collision/overturn of a conveyance in which a horse is being transported. This insures up to a maximum of $4,000 and can be applied regardless of the number of horses owned. Losses are restricted to one claim per year.

Enhanced Personal Liability 

Extend your liability coverage to include the non-commercial care, custody and control of up to a maximum of 3 non-owned horses in any environment. Valuable coverage in circumstances such as:

a) Emergency boarding situations. (Example: the displacement of horses due to a catastrophic event like a fire or flood
b) The neighborly and not-for-profit housing of up to 3 non-owned horses on a short or long term basis.

Optional Accident Death & Dismemberment 

Provides an ADDITIONAL $50,000 Principal Sum AD&D  for a total principal sum of $80,000.  NOTE: Members must be 69 years old or younger to qualify.

NEW!This coverage has been enhanced to offer higher fracture benefits (further enhanced if wearing an equine industry approved helmet) and increased dental benefits.  It is important to note that unlike other types of insurance, AD&D policies "stack" - meaning that if there is a loss covered by more that one policy, both or all of the policies respond.

Travel Insurance (out of Province/Country)

Provides $1,000,000 out of province/country coverage for Medical/Hospitalization. Trips up to 90 days in duration, any number of trips/year, worldwide and, DOES NOT EXCLUDE participation in and/or preparing for equine activity/competition.   Many policies in the market do exclude such activity. NOTE: ALL covered individuals must have current AEF membership and be 69 years old or younger to qualify.  Subject to pre-existing medical conditions.   Please contact Capri Insurance for exclusions and terms.

Members Tack

Broad coverage insurance applicable anywhere in North America, limited to $2,500 subject to a $500 deductible.  Losses are restricted to one claim per year.

Weekly Indemnity/Loss of Income from Sickness or Injury

Provides income replacement if the member is injured or sick and cannot work - to a maximum of $500/week. Members must have reported income to the Canadian Revenue Agency in the most recent tax year to qualify. Please contact Capri directly to apply for this coverage.
